What happens when you cross a fun house and an art exhibition? No wonder, because this is exactly what was just opened in the auction house Phillips in collaboration with the artist and set designer Gary Card.
The auctioneers of Mayfair, Phillips, sell art and are very good at it. In their posh surroundings at Berkeley Square, you will normally find pristine art exhibits to encourage potential shoppers to open their very large wallets and spend earnest money on a Basquiat or Warhol.
This last show is no longer about Ouch. I can not afford that, but where is the art?
As I navigate through a colorful maze, I spend a lot of time staring at things and wondering if they are part of the installation or just some artwork. It turns out that the growling red face on the back of the round door does not belong to Gary Cards Set at all. It's thanks to Card that he lets it merge seamlessly until the spinning flower of Yayoi Kusama - she of the Infinity Rooms - feels at home in his trippy world.
Take a look to discover some of Card's playful creations, including a crazy man with a polygonal head on a shed and something that looks like a cross between a cucumber and Mr Potato Head over the entrance.
After wandering through the colorful plastic curtains and picking up all the smileys on the floor, I focus on recognizing each artwork, and the sensory overload continues, from polka dots to artist Cindy Sherman in one of her typical alter ego portraits , dressed as a clown.
The highlight is a video triptych by artist collective Smack based on Hieronymus Bosch's Garden of Earthly Delights. The screens show Eden, Paradise and Hell, each filled with peculiar details like sleeping giant cats in Eden and a worm with huge lips for a head in paradise - far scarier than heavenly. The best is saved for the wonderfully dark hell. A huge skeleton with a hammer and a judge's wig condemns a country in which an overweight man is force-fed and a pig-headed man writhes agonizingly on the ground. There are quirky, sinful humor on all three screens, and we've been able to watch them over and over again, yet discover new things each time.
I've had to keep reminding myself that this exhibition is actually about selling art - a big compliment to Card and Phillips for not coming across at all. It's fun, accessible and puts a smile on my face - definitely not what I expected from an auction house visit.
Hysterical: Host of Gard Card is Phillips in Mayfair until August 21, 2019. Admission is free. There is a VR walkthrough that lets you view the show remotely.
